Farewell, Sandy

No power loss last night, and we didn't sustain any damage. This morning, Jon had an inspection for a job he's working on, so he should be able to give a report on the roads and flooding when he gets home. We are thankful for safety.

Hurricane Update

As of 10:20pm on Monday night, we still have power.  We have experienced a few brown-outs and some flickering, but no extended loss of power.  We have gotten lots of wind and rain, but we seem to be just south of the line where most of Sandy's wrath has been poured out (literally).  Tonight will be telling, as that is when the highest winds and most rainfall are predicted, but for now, we are doing okay.

When Life Gives You a Hurricane...

We're having a hurricane party at our house!  When the power goes out, we celebrate with Peanut Butter and Marshmallow Fluff sandwiches, as well as lots of special foods and games.  The kids love storm food.
The winds are whipping outside right now, and the rain is falling in buckets, but we are warm and cozy inside (with our power still on, for now), and we're treating it like a snow day, which means a party!

All the boys got Hurricane Haircuts this morning (high and tight, to withstand the winds), and I'm glad our power didn't go out mid-kid-cut.  David usually hates haircuts, but we told him that Mommy was going to "mow" his hair, and he was cool with it. He currently is in love with the lawnmower (adding to his Roomba obsession).
If you don't hear from us for a while, we're probably without power.  But don't think we're not making the best of it.

Doesn't Michael look so cute with his two front teeth missing?!
It's even cuter when he tries to say the letter 's'.

The Aerial View

This is what the kids look like from the top of a weeping willow tree.
I'll let you guess who took this picture.

When the Cat's Away

While I was at work last night, Daddy and the kids made this cool tent.  They camped out until the kids decided that it was too cold and that their beds were softer.

Kate Turns 5

We had a day of fun and surprises yesterday to celebrate Kate's 5th birthday.
 She loved her gifts

which included a new pink dress (with flowers and sparkles, just as she likes).

She wanted Cracker Barrel pancakes with apples and whipped cream for lunch.  They brought her a (free) piece of chocolate cake as a birthday bonus.  I'm pretty sure that Kate chose 100% carbs for all her meals.  Girl after my own heart.  :-)

After dinner, we went to Fun Land, per Kate's choice

Kate liked the very gentle rides and games.

She was not excited about the motorcycle racing (though the boys loved it!)

She really loved her gifts.  This was a book light from Grandma & Grandpa, which she really has been wanting for a long time, but I could give this girl acorns and a pile of leaves wrapped up, and she would love them.

We painted finger and toe nails.

We expended all that sugar-induced energy on the huge play tubes and moon bounce at Fun Land.

Daddy must have sway because Kate asked for Daddy's favorite dessert instead of  a cake.  Oreo dessert capped off the evening right before bed.  Everyone slept well last night.
Happy birthday, sweet, precious Kate!  We love you!!

Happy 5th Birthday, Kate

My Kate is FIVE today! Let the partying begin!

She opened her first 2 presents this morning, which included a new birthday dress (in pink, of course, with flower on it) and a new book light from Grandma and Grandpa.  She was more than a little excited.

Fall Home & Garden Show 2012

The Fredericksburg Home & Garden Show was this past weekend, so we visited Daddy while he represented Rappahannock Building & Remodeling, Inc.
The wall had lots of nice pictures (lots more on the Facebook page) to show the quality craftsmanship that the company provides.  On the right side of the picture is a demonstration of the Kerdi Shower System that they use.  Here's a video.

The kids and I enjoyed walking around and seeing all the displays.   The kids loved all the free candy and trinkets that the vendors were handing out.

I'm not sure why Fidelity Bank had a booth, or why they had a dressed-up lion.  Maybe to finance all the projects that people didn't know they needed until the home show?  Either way, the kids thought the lion was pretty awesome.

One booth had nothing except a Fiat.  Why?

This booth was for Invisible Fence, and they had a friendly dog that the kids loved petting.

New Job

I spent the last 11+ years working as an Intensive Care nurse.  Throughout those years, I have been full-time, part-time, & occasional staff (prn), but the last couple of years had taken their toll on me both physically and emotionally.  Some physical challenges have made it hard for me to take really good care of patients who needed turning and lifting and complete care.  Also, I have been finding it harder to leave things at work emotionally.  Maybe it's just that I have children now, but I really struggled emotionally with the trauma patients and other tragic cases.  (Not that I was calloused before, but, in the past, I was able to take good care of my patients at work, but leave it there emotionally).
For over a year, I had been looking for another job. I had even considered quitting for a while, but I knew that would be a challenge to ever go back if I needed to in the future. Plus, with all the implications of my professional license, we decided that I should maintain my RN.
In the midst of prayer and searching (and lots of waiting!), God brought the most perfect job along to me.  I am not sure how I got this wonderful job, except that God is good.  I am now a part-time Nurse Consultant with my hospital system.  It requires more hours than the ICU, but at 20hrs/week, I am offered a full benefits package, which is such a wonderful bonus (it's been 8 years since we've had dental or vision coverage!), considering Jon's business.  So now, I do disease-process teaching and post-discharge follow-up, as well as after-hours triage for home health, hospice, & clinic patients, and for the Emergency Department.  Best of all, we are supposed to be able to work from home by the end of 2013 (fingers crossed!)  I am so thankful for this job. It's been a smooth adjustment for us all, and we are able to work our schedules so that Jon and I don't have to obtain childcare for our kids.  We are beyond thankful for this new job, and we appreciate those who prayed with us about it.  God is good!

Another Tooth, Another Note

Michael lost tooth #4.
Dear tooth fairy
I lost my tooth
this time dont forget the note.
O i forgot my name it is Michael
tell everybody i said hi
PS i wish you good luck.

Sad Kate

Kate is sad because the weather is turning cooler, and I made her wear jeans on an especially cool day.  I guess I will need to get her more cable tights for some of her skirts.
She also did not like that I put away some of her summer dresses that she loves so much.
Kate and I can commiserate together with our loathing of cool/cold weather.

Yay for Good Things

David is happy because he gets to be a big boy by sitting at the counter and coloring Veggie Tales.
Mommy is happy because her amazing, techie husband figured out what was wrong with the desktop and fixed it for free.  What a smart man I married.  It's nice to post on a normal machine again with pictures that are not grainy from the cracked camera screen on my phone.  I love my phone, but it has limits.  I am thankful for technology!

Michael made a self-portrait in school.  I love how he drew in his new crooked teeth that are coming up.

Big Eater

This 6 year old ate a full-sized adult meal from Firehouse Subs today.  That's a fully-loaded 8" club, bag of chips, and large cherry limeade.  I can not imagine his teen years.

She Can't Contain Her Excitement

Kate was just a little bit excited about the horse carriage ride with her Daddy on her Daddy/Daughter date this week.

Daddy/Daughter Date Night

On Monday, Chickfila had a Daddy/Daughter Date Night, so Kate and Jon enjoyed a night out together.  Kate's favorite part was the horse-drawn carriage ride with the princesses.

Big Boy

David has decided that he wants to color up at the stools like the big kids.  Soon we will be retiring the booster that he uses at the table.

Turtle Power

David loves to play with this musical turtle.  It's one of his favorite toys.

Happy Birthday, Jon

Kate wore her favorite party dress in honor of Jon's birthday today. We love you, Daddy!

Talk a Little, Talk a Lot

David has really advanced in his speaking this past week.  He speaks in full sentences, and he is much easier to understand in general, though he still has that adorable toddler speech.  It is pretty fun to hear him express himself so well.

Green Tomatoes

It figures that I would get my first green tomatoes in October, right before the first frost.  I stink at gardening.

Leaf Mulching

I don't know if Michael will love mowing this much when he is a teenager, but he begged Jon to let him mulch the leaves on Saturday.

Computation Failure

This summer, our laptop died.  We decided not to replace it.  Unfortunately, our desktop has been having trouble lately, and I believe it is entering the hospice days.  I am now posting from my phone.  I hope that my phone isn't next...

Art Diva

My Kate just loves to paint and color.  She spends quite a bit of time every day doing so.
She used to color only pretty, flower-themed landscapes, but lately, she's been broadening her style to include different genres and themes.  But her go-to comfort theme is definitely pastoral scenes that include a multitude of flowers.
